For Christmas, I got a lovely little gift called mono. Sadly, I had to sit out all of January's meetings because of this. So these posts have been written vicariously through our fearless leader.
When most of us Westerners thing of yoga, we think of a relaxing way to stretch out our bodies. As for origami, many of us think of it as a pretty way of folding paper. The truth is that both are so much more than that. From the point of view as a Daisy leader, it's also a unique learning experience.
With Chinese New Year's just around the corner, we planned meeting fourteen as a way to introduce our girls so several Eastern concepts. Our meeting started out by reading the passage ___ from 5 Flowers, 4 Stories, 3 Cheers For Animals! Following the passage was also a lesson on origami. First lesson learned- before doing this activity, take your origami paper and draw some dotted lines on the back of the paper. This will make it easier for the kids to see where they have to fold. Our next activity was yoga. As we found out, our kids gym teachers have incorporated some basic yoga into their classes, so our girls knew some of the poses we did. On the other hand, some of them took the approach that many of us adults do. They wanted to try and do the poses perfectly, so we had a lot of girls that were falling over and giggling. It was fun though, and something different than other activities we have done. So the second lesson learned is don't forget to emphasize that it's ok if they can't do the position perfectly, just do it as best they can, and don't forget to breathe!
This was also the first meeting back for the New Year for us, so our girls were very anxious and eager to be back! As for me, when I finally showed up to pick up my daughter, I had to keep them away from me (they all love giving out those hugs!).
